  • Tsunami hazard assessment: Maps identifying the areas of likely tsunami flooding for at-risk communities are used to guide local tsunami hazard planning. Inundation maps are created using a combination of numerical models assuming possible tsunami scenarios.

NOAA performs research and develops models that are used to forecast tsunamis and create tsunami inundation and evacuation maps. Forecast models are provided to the NOAA's Weather Service forecasters and the Inundation models and maps are provided to State and national planners and emergency managers. Models are critical to using data to issue warnings to communities at risk.
